In many of my works the architecture stands in the the center and, through its appearance, pointes on historical, social and political phenomenas.
I am particularly interested in places that show “layers” and which - thanks to the various architectural elements - can be read like a book.
Beat works with spaces. In contrast to a piece of music that was composed for an acoustically balanced concert hall, in Beat Gysin's works the (existing or built) performance space with its history, acoustics and appearance becomes part of the composition.
Our two artistic approaches to architecture - one acoustic, the other visual - complement each other and led us to our collaboration.
The goal of our work is to find the fragile balance between sound and image.
The challenge is that neither sound nor image are considered as illustrative, but as complementary. The images are a key to understanding the composition and its relationship to the space, the sound allows to really see the image in its complexity.
The search for this fragile balance that has accompanied us for several years, has become an enriching, intensive and stimulating exchange.
Composer Beat Gysin (1968) studied piano, chemistry, composition (Thomas Kessler, Hanspeter Kyburz) and musical theory (Roland Moser, Detlev Müller-Siemens) in Basel. Born into a family of musicians, he has composed over fifty works, many of them prize-winning, for everything from solo performers to orchestral ensembles. They have been performed by the Quatuor Arditti, the Basler Madrigalisten, the Ensemble Phoenix, the Collegium Novum, the Ensemble Contrechamps, the Ensemble Recherche and (on numerous occasions) the Windspiel and umsn`jip ensembles.

DAYLIT DAYLIGHT | WITH SCANNER
Daylit Daylight is taken from the new album, An Ascent (2020) from my dear friend Scanner. What a joy and honor to work with such an openminded talented artist as Robin.
The album was recorded entirely live, with no preparation. It captures exactly the moment of composition and performance at the very same time, equally so. None of the pieces were altered afterwards, with only perhaps the tiniest amount of trimming in terms of length, but otherwise remain true to what happened at that moment in time.
For Daylit Daylight I worked with photographs and mapped the image to the sound, as it builds layer by layer. Both the music and photographs are analogue, and for this film I have kept the photographic grain, moving from analogue to digital within the image, introducing colour and graphic patterns as the piece develops.
EMMANUEL TUGNY
